D75-25-237: Thinking like a music therapist: How to use music to support student communication, engagement, and regulation in the classroom.
Arts, Math 2025/2026

Description: Open to ALL: Classroom Teachers, Paraprofessionals and Arts Teachers. Music Therapists use music to promote rapport, support independence and build social-emotional skills in neurodiverse learners through active music making. Music Therapists also use their musical selves to think and experience non-musical contexts in a musical way. Join The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music’s music therapists in a workshop where they will share how music therapists think about music as a tool for supporting students. By noticing the music elements in the room, from the sound level to the tempo of students; teachers, aides and paraprofessionals can learn to tune into their personal musicality to engage with and communicate with students in ways that support the learning and social environment of everyone in the classroom. In this workshop, participants will learn about music therapy as a profession and about BKCM’s music therapy programs. Participants will be led in active music making, learning strategies that can be immediately applied in the classroom. No music experience is required. Bring your curiosity, desire for easeful and productive relationships with students, and passion for learning!
