D75-26-285: STEAM by Design: Project-Based Learning Through Architecture 2-part series
Arts, Mathematics (STEM) 2026/2027

Description: In this two-part professional development series from the Center for Architecture (CFA), educators will explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and design thinking as an integrated approach to real-world problem-solving. Open to arts and classroom teachers alike, the series offers a ready-made structure for guiding a full Project-Based Learning cycle, from identifying a problem, ideating, prototyping, and revising.
The built environment is a natural template for this work. Buildings, playgrounds, and neighborhoods are part of students' daily lives, making them a natural way to explore real design challenges like form, function, materials, and community needs.
Session 1 introduces design thinking activities and gives teachers hands-on practice applying them to sample curriculum using CFA's resource library. Participants should come ready to think about a topic they'd like to teach in March or April, as this session lays out the groundwork for the unit they'll develop in Session 2.
Session 2 shifts focus to creating a personal lesson or unit. Teachers arrive with a specific topic or project in mind and work hands-on to build it out, leaving with a tangible, ready-to-implement plan.
Guided by CFA design educators, participants will build project frameworks rooted in STEAM and design-based learning, with interactive design challenges throughout. All materials are provided, with a strong emphasis on accessibility and inclusivity for all learners.
