D75-18-187: Phonics and Word Study: A Road Map to Comprehension
Literacy 2018/2019

Description: This professional learning session will address an explicit, sequential, and systematic approach to teaching phonics. Participants will gain a better understanding of how to support their students in mastering the mechanics of reading. Phonics is one of the pillars of reading instruction and contributes to the growth of reading of most students. Therefore, this session will concentrate heavily on providing teachers with the knowledge and strategies necessary in helping students grasp the alphabetic principle. Participants will learn ways to help students learn the relationships between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language. This course will help teachers explicitly and systematically instruct students in how to relate letters and sounds, how to break spoken words into sounds, and how to blend sounds to form words. Teachers will also learn strategies to assist students in application of letter-sound correspondences in order to read words both in isolation and connected text. Ample opportunities and practice will be provided through the use of varied multi-sensory, hands on activities that serve as reinforcement for students and to help them put their knowledge to use.
