D75-22-4525: SMiLE Day 1
Literacy 2022/2023

Description: This workshop will provide training on a ‘language to literacy’ phonics based program designed to teach reading to students with autism, moderate to severe language, processing issues and/or physical delays. SMiLE has demonstrated success in teaching literacy to students who were unable to retain phonemic awareness using a traditional method of instruction. SMiLE is divided into five modules and begins with sound-symbol relationships. It then moves on to words including nouns, verbs, colors, numbers and moves further along by introducing sentences and ultimately stories. This program emphasizes a scripted, structured and consistent methodology, aligning seamlessly with the ABA methodology. Independent activities are also embedded for students to engage in their individual work stations. Participants who attend this complete series will receive a “Certificate of Course Completion” from the District 75 Office of Literacy.
