D75-24-5186: SMiLE Day 2
Literacy 2024/2025
Description: THIS DAY IS ONLY FOR SMILE TRAINEES READY FOR DAY TWO TRAINING IN SMILE (MODULE TWO - NOUNS) This workshop will provide training on a language to literacy phonics based program designed to teach reading to students with autism, moderate to severe language, processing issues and/or physical delays. SMiLE has demonstrated success in teaching literacy to students who were unable to retain phonemic awareness using a traditional method of instruction. SMiLE is divided into five modules and begins with sound-symbol relationships. It then moves on to words including nouns, verbs, colors, numbers and moves further along by introducing sentences and ultimately stories. This program emphasizes a scripted, structured and consistent methodology, aligning seamlessly with the ABA methodology. Independent activities are also embedded for students to engage in their individual work stations. ** Prerequisite for this course is having already attended the Day One SMiLE Training and achieved Module One success with at least one student.
