D75-18-404: MISSED OPPORTUNITY/BEFORE CORE (AM) (the Impact on Alternative Langauge and Communication Development)/SAME SONG DIFFERENT SINGER/CURRENT AAC SOLUTIONS(PM)
Instructional Technology (STEM) 2018/2019
Description: This workshop is designed for SLP's to increase awareness of new trends in the development of Alternative Language skills. The AM session will focus on MISSED OPPORTUNITIES. There is little comparison in the development of natural language to that of Alternative Language development. The greatest disparity is in "Opportunity". This workshop will focus on the the natural experiences and opportunities that the students with communication impairments have missed. We will translate this into strategies that will provide the kind of practice that can help develop language and communication. Learning to perform a task without real meaning in real time holds little value for them in developing their personalities and building relationships . When first opportunities for AAC come after language WOULD HAVE BEEN typically developed, we cannot expect students to take off without re-creating the developmental support that enables language and communication to grow. THE PM SESSION will focus on comparing and contrasting CURRENT solutions for AAC. It is in the unique options within the systems where we find the right match for our students. The right solution opens the door to independent communication, unique expression and the dream of conversation. An effective AAC user moves beyond learned activities because they have opportunities to generalize and apply skills with the appropriate reinforcement.
