D75-18-403: LOST in TRANSLATION. Exploring bilingual options in AAC
Instructional Technology (STEM) 2018/2019
Description: This PD is designed to discuss the obstacles in AAC for bilingual students. The concept of fostering language and communication skills for non-verbal or minimally verbal students can be further complicated by the introduction of another language. There are more and more options available for AAC users and a more streamlined ability to toggle back and forth between English and the second language. We will explore complications such as exposure to one language in the home while being educated or exposed to English in the school environment. We will explore the positive effects of a bilingual voice output device with picture symbol support in developing English for our Non-English speaking parents. In additional we will discuss the foundation skills for AAC that should be the focus in preparation for acquiring a personal communication device. THIS PD is being taught by member of the Technology Solutions AT team that are bilingual and service and evaluated bilingual AAC users.
