D75-17-3492: Hands-On Mathematical Procedures
Mathematics (STEM) 2018/2019

Description: Have you ever thought about why division, especially long division, seems to be more difficult than the other basic math operations? Why do you multiply with the reciprocal when you want to divide by a fraction? Why do we learn so many rules in math and still get it wrong? If you want to do math without understanding, you have to learn hundreds of rules and all the situations in which to apply them. It is better for you to understand the underlying concepts and think mathematically instead of executing rules, many of which will expire over time. Participants from all grade levels are welcome as we explore the why’s of mathematical procedures and help participants connect meaningful big ideas for their CCLS aligned lesson and unit plans.
