Inclusive Education, Student Advocacy 2019/2020

Description: This series of professional learning is committed to helping students engage in a year-long Student Advocacy Project which supports their learning of the history of the Disability Rights Movement, connecting the Movement to their own understanding of themselves, their strengths, and their needs as individuals with disabilities. Participation requirements (per school):
• One school-based assistant principal to attend a two-day introductory training (9/24/2020 and 9/25/2020)
• One school-based teacher per participating school committed to supporting and growing student advocacy training through participation in designated training sessions and resulting awareness-building across the school community – the selected teacher must work directly with the school’s two selected Student Ambassadors, and attend the two-day introductory training, all full day staff sessions 10/11/19, 12/3/19, 2/7/2020, 5/7/2020, all Student Project Sessions (10:00am-12:30pm on 10/17/2019, 12/12/2019, and 2/13/2020), and a culminating Student Advocacy Symposium on 5/7/2020.
• Two Student Ambassadors (grades 9-12) per participating school committed to attending the three Student Project Sessions (10:00am-12:30pm on 10/17/2019, 12/12/2019, and 2/13/2020), turn-keying information at their schools, and leading/presenting a culminating Advocacy Project to build school and community awareness of personal rights and civic responsibilities for individuals with disabilities. Students will share and display their work at the culminating Student Advocacy Symposium (5/7/2020).
