D75-22-4469: The C-P-A Approach to Learning Mathematics
Mathematics (STEM) 2022/2023

Description: C-P-A stands for: Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract. During the first section we learn about and share best practices in a concrete approach of hands-on learning. We will look at introductions of the basic math operations and how a hands-on approach leads to more conceptual understanding of otherwise rogue procedural training. The second part is all about visualizing math problems, also known as bar modeling or Singapore math. We will learn how to visualize word problems to firstly being able to decode the written part, and then translate them into a visual language before getting to the conceptual and procedural part of problem solving. The last part is about the procedural part, the abstract mathematics. We learn about and share best practices in making math procedures available to our students. We all have to deal with the fact that students do not retain as well as we would like. A conceptual understanding of the procedures gives our students more points to connect and retain "the why of the what." Participants will earn 6 CTLE hours.
